23 Nov 2016 UK-Japan Seminar on the Politics and Practices of ‘Low Fertility and Ageing Population’ in Post-War Japan

28 January 2017, 9am-5.30pm, Whitworth Hall, University of Manchester

In Japan, policymakers have long struggled to come up with effective measures against ‘low fertility and ageing population’ (shōshi kōreika). But, what exactly does ‘low fertility and ageing population’ mean in practice? What are the politics behind the policies of ‘low fertility and ageing population’? The proposed seminar examines histories and practices surrounding issues of ageing and fertility in postwar Japan in order to better contextualize the ongoing policy debate over the country’s ‘low fertility and ageing population’.
