FAQ
Q.1 How do I apply for one of the JSPS Programmes ?
Firstly, the JSPS Fellowship programmes require applicants to establish contact with a Japanese researcher in their chosen field of research. Secondly, once you have located a Japanese researcher, the next step is to send him/her a letter/e-mail with detailed information on your proposed research activity and request him/her to host you under a JSPS fellowship. Thirdly, complete and submit your application.

The method of application submission is dependent upon which programme you wish to apply for. Please note that at present only applications for the JSPS Post-doctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers (Short-Term) can be submitted through the JSPS London Office. All other programmes should be applied for through the JSPS Tokyo Head Office or the appropriate UK nominating authority.

Q.2 How do I find a Japanese researcher?
The first point of contact should be your departmental colleagues or supervisor. For those wishing to make initial enquiries you may also wish to visit the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Sport and Culture (MEXT) web site . There are links on MEXT's site to Japanese universities, colleges and national research institutes.

Q.3 Is it permitted to apply for a Postdoctoral fellowship through both JSPS Tokyo and a JSPS Overseas Office at the same time?
Yes, however please note that should either application be successful you must withdraw the other application.

Q.4 How long does it take for a decision to be made once an application has been made ?
Notification of selection results is normally approximately three months after the closing date.

Q.5 What happens once I am selected?
Once applicants have been selected, all administrative processes are handled by JSPS Tokyo. Please see their website for details of procedures once a fellowship has been awarded.

Q.6 In the selection procedure, is there any preference given to any nationality or specific research field?
The screening is made on academic merit alone, so there is no preference as to nationality or research field.

Q.7 What kind of funding does JSPS provide?
Funding is only available to those who participate in one of our programmes. We do not accept individual requests for travel bursars or to attend conferences in Japan.

Q.8 I'm not from an EU country, what shall I do?
Please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to advise you and, if necessary, put you in touch with the relevant counterpart foreign academic institution.
