Multilateral Research Funding

Core to Core Programme

From FY 2012, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) will implement a newly-revised Core-to-Core Programme, comprising two components: (1) Advanced Research Networks and (2) Asia-Africa Science Platforms. While the Asia-Africa Science Platforms require counterpart counties to be in Asia and/or Africa with full diplomatic links with Japan, the Advanced Research Networks require them to be any of at least two or more countries including the UK that have diplomatic relations with Japan. The following particularly explains the Advanced Research Networks, designed to create top world-class research centers that partner over the long term with other core research institutions around the world in advancing research in leading-edge fields, on issues of high international priority. As well as advancing research in these fields, the Core-to-Core Programme will also concentrate on fostering the next generations of trailblazing young researchers.

The Heads of Research Councils from the G8 countries (G8-HORCs) Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the UK, and the USA (Italy is not participating) have established a new joint funding initiative.
Global challenges need global solutions and this pilot initiative provides a new framework for co-operation across a broad range of disciplines and on a multilateral and multinational basis.
The initiative begins with a first call on Exascale Computing, further calls on other topics are expected in 2011 and 2012.
