Call for FY2019

Type A: Bilateral Joint Projects with JSPS’s Counterpart Institutions

- Based on an agreement with The Royal Society, JSPS will cover the costs of the Japanese team, and The Royal Society will cover the costs of the British team.   

- It is intended that JSPS and the Royal Society will fund the same joint research projects. 

- The counterpart British team leader is to submit an application to the Royal Society. Applications submitted by one side only will not be accepted. Japanese/British team leaders should therefore be sure that their counterpart submits a matching application.

*Please notice under the scheme, only Joint Research Projects are avialable, not Seminars.

Duration of Project

Starting date: 1 April 2019 for the Japanese side and up to and including 18 March 2019 to 2020 for the UK side. Project duration is fixed at 2 years.

Japanese universities / research institutions must complete the e-application process on the JSPS website. For details, please refer to (Japanese) (English)

JSPS Tokyo: Wednesday 22nd August to Wednesday 5th September, 2018

*Please note that applications from the Japanese institution must be sent centrally. JSPS Tokyo does not accept an application from an individual researcher. A Japanese institution may set an earlier, internal deadline to collect and check the format of the application before submitting to JSPS Tokyo. Under no circumstances will JSPS Tokyo accept a late application.

JSPS: Up to JPY 2,000,000 per fiscal year (Up to JPY 4,000,000 in total)

Royal Society: Up to GBP 12,000 in total

Coverage of 
Project Funding

JSPS will cover the expenses of the Japanese teams; mainly travel and accommodation costs.

1) International and domestic travel expenses 
2) Other expenses (Consumables, honoraria, material printing, communication, meeting expenses in Japan, etc.)

Applicants must hold a full-time or equivalent position as a researcher at a university or research institute in Japan that is eligible to receive Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI).
