Under this program, fellowships are awarded to Japanese postdoctoral researchers at the early stages of their career to conduct research at universities or research institutions outside of Japan for a period of up to two years. The fellowship covers travel expenses, a stipend and a research grant.

3) | The candidate must not have more than a cumulative total of 5 years in a permanent full-time research position at a university or other research institution. |
4) | The candidate must be a citizen of Japan; or if a foreign national, must have permanent residency status in Japan. |
Applicants who have been awarded this fellowship before are not eligible to apply for this award again.
Grants are awarded for a period of up to 2 years.
For this current call, successful applicants are asked to start their award between 1 April 2023 and 29 February 2024.

If you decide to host a Japanese researcher under this fellowship, please cooperate on the following points concerning their application:
・Please complete the “Letter of Intent to Accept Prospective Fellow by Host Researcher” document when you are asked to by the applicant.
・Please discuss the research plan in detail with the applicant before they submit their proposal, this is an important point of the selection criteria.
・Please write a letter of acceptance if the applicant passes the selection process and when you are asked by the applicant. This letter should be submitted to JSPS Headquarters by the applicant within 40 days of the intended fellowship start date.
1) Screening procedure Screening procedure
A fair and transparent screening process is carried out by JSPS's Screening Committee in Tokyo for Young Researcher Fellowships, comprising of prominent Japanese researchers. For the screening process, both a review of application documents and interviews with the candidates are conducted.
2) Screening criteria
Through his/her overseas experience, the applicant can be expected to become a highly adept scholar capable of being a research leader fostering the future of scientific advances. The applicant’s research plan should indicate (1) how they can expect to enhance Japan’s research environment and undertake new research topics that develop from his/her research activities at the overseas research institution, and (2) how they can be expected to produce sufficient advances in their research activities prior to his/her departure overseas. A concrete research plan that has sufficiently discussed and agreed upon in advance with the host researcher overseas is necessary. Adequate foreign language proficiency is desirable. For English, this should be either 79 points for (Internet-based) TOEFL, 730 points for TOEIC, or Grade Pre-1 for the EIKEN Test in Practical English Proficiency.
