Bilateral Joint Projects with JSPS’ Counterpart Funding Institution in the UK (The Royal Society)
This scheme is based on an agreement with The Royal Society. JSPS will cover the costs of the Japan team, and The Royal Society will cover the costs of the UK team.
- It is intended that JSPS and The Royal Society will fund the same joint research projects.
- The counterpart UK team leader is to submit an application to The Royal Society. Applications submitted by one side only will not be accepted. Japan and UK team leaders should therefore be sure that their counterpart submits a matching application.

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities.

Social sciences, Arts and Humanities This call for proposals seeks to explore the role of social science, arts and humanities research in pandemic preparedness and post-pandemic recovery, including how we can build sustainable societal systems, communities and cultures that can respond to future outbreaks. This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. Total Amount of Project Funding |
Project funding by JSPS: Up to JPY 10,000,000 per fiscal year per project (Up to JPY 30,000,000 for entire project period) Project funding by UKRI: UK applicants can request between GBP 350,000 to GBP 425,000 from UKRI for the UK component of the project. UK applicants are required to provide a detailed breakdown of the UK budget in the UK costing template (which is part of the main application form). |

The ESRC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) are inviting applications for the UK-Japan Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Connections grants, aimed at fostering the development of long-term relationships with Japanese researchers in the field of social sciences and humanities (SSH).
The overall budget for this call is £1.5 million, with funding up to £50,000 (at 100% non standard fEC) per applicant for a maximum period of 18 months.

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are pleased to invite applications to the first UKRI-JSPS joint call. Deadline for Expression of Interests/ Full applications: mid July to mid August 2018 This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities. The UKRI has allocated £5 million and JSPS has allocated 300,000,000 yen (approximately £2 million) to this activity to support 10 bilateral projects in total. Successful projects should start from 14th February 2019. The UKRI component of this call will be funded through the Fund for International Collaboration and the JSPS component of this call will receive financial support from within the framework of its International Joint Research Programme.

Under this scheme JSPS has no formal agreement with another funding body. The Japan based group can receive support from JSPS and the counterpart group in another country should seek support for their involvement from a funding body recognised by JSPS.
