FUNDING CALL: FY2024 JSPS and The Royal Society Joint Call for Bilateral Research Projects

This scheme is based on an agreement with The Royal Society. JSPS will cover the costs of the Japan team, and The Royal Society will cover the costs of the UK team.  

- It is intended that JSPS and The Royal Society will fund the same joint research projects.

- The counterpart UK team leader is to submit an application to The Royal Society. Applications submitted by one side only will not be accepted. Japan and UK team leaders should therefore be sure that their counterpart submits a matching application.

Eligible Research Fields: Natural Sciences

Duration of Project: 2 years

Maximum number of Projects to be supported: 5

Level of funding:

JSPS: Up to 2,000,000 JPY per fiscal year (Up to 4,000,000 JPY in total). This amount is to be used for international and domestic travel expenses, including subsistence, of all Japan based team members and should account for 50% or more of the grant. This grant can also be used for consumables, honoraria, material printing, communication, service charges and meeting expenses in Japan.

Royal Society: Up to 12,000 GBP in total. Travel can be conducted by all project participants. Up to 3,000 GBP of the total amount can be spent on research expenses and consumables.

Starting date: 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025 for the Japan side and no later than 10 March 2024 for the UK side.

Applications should be sent centrally by the team leader’s research institution in Japan to JSPS Tokyo. JSPS Tokyo does not accept applications from individual researchers and please note that the applicant's affiliated institution may set an earlier, internal deadline to collect and check the format of these applications before forwarding to JSPS Tokyo. Under no circumstances will JSPS Tokyo accept a late application.

  • Please note there is also a JSPS Open Partnership Scheme for joint projects or seminars with similar levels of coverage and no limit to the research areas covered. Under this scheme JSPS has no formal agreement with another funding body. The Japan based group can receive support from JSPS and the counterpart group in another country should seek support for their involvement from a funding body recognised by JSPS. JRPs-LEAD with UKRI (JSPS - UKRI joint call)

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)  provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities.

Social sciences, Arts and Humanities

This call for proposals seeks to explore the role of social science, arts and humanities research in pandemic preparedness and post-pandemic recovery, including how we can build sustainable societal systems, communities and cultures that can respond to future outbreaks.

This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength and shared interest.

Whilst this call is open across the entire breadth of the social sciences, arts and humanities, we are particularly interested in proposals that:

  • Acknowledge the current global context in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and aim to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic. For example, this might include proposals that aim to contribute towards improving policy, communication and service design post COVID, speeding up recovery and reducing costs and long-term scarring, or influencing the direction of recovery towards a more equitable, inclusive, sustainable and resilient societies, communities and cultures.

Proposals should also:

  • Consider how to make the best use of available expertise in the UK and Japan, together with the added value of new existing collaborations.
  • Demonstrate evidence of the strength and complementarity of their collaboration and how the partnership will be managed.

Project funding by JSPS:

Up to JPY 10,000,000 per fiscal year per project (Up to JPY 30,000,000 for entire project period)

Project funding by UKRI:

UK applicants can request between GBP 350,000 to GBP 425,000 from UKRI for the UK component of the project. UK applicants are required to provide a detailed breakdown of the UK budget in the UK costing template (which is part of the main application form).

ESRC-AHRC UK-Japan SSH Connections Grants

The ESRC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) are inviting applications for the UK-Japan Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Connections grants, aimed at fostering the development of long-term relationships with Japanese researchers in the field of social sciences and humanities (SSH).
The overall budget for this call is £1.5 million, with funding up to £50,000 (at 100% non standard fEC) per applicant for a maximum period of 18 months.

UKRI - JSPS joint call 2018 (JRPs Lead with UKRI)

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are pleased to invite applications to the first UKRI-JSPS joint call. Deadline for Expression of Interests/ Full applications: mid July to mid August 2018 This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities. The UKRI has allocated £5 million and JSPS has allocated 300,000,000 yen (approximately £2 million) to this activity to support 10 bilateral projects in total. Successful projects should start from 14th February 2019. The UKRI component of this call will be funded through the Fund for International Collaboration and the JSPS component of this call will receive financial support from within the framework of its International Joint Research Programme.
