Fellowships

The method of application submission is dependent upon which programme you wish to apply for. Please note that at present only applications for the JSPS Post-doctoral Fellowship for Foreign Researchers (Short-Term) can be submitted through the JSPS London Office. All other programmes should be applied for through the JSPS Headquarters or the appropriate UK nominating authority.

Summer Programme


The JSPS Summer Program provides opportunities for young pre- and post-doctoral researchers from Europe and North America to receive an orientation on Japanese culture and research systems and to pursue research under the guidance of host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutes over a period of two months during the summer.

Application Method Applications are submitted through foreign nominating authorities. British nationals can apply through the JSPS London.

Postdoctoral Fellowship (Short-term)


This program provides opportunities for pre- and postdoctoral researches from Europe and North America to conduct cooperative research with leading research groups in Japanese universities and other research institutions under the guidance of a host researcher.

Number  60 per year worldwide (plus an additional 20 for the UK)
Duration of Stay 1 - 12 months
Coverage of
Fellowship
  • Return air ticket
  • Monthly maintenance allowance:
    ¥362,000 (Post-doc Fellows)
    ¥200,000 (Doctoral Fellows)
  • Overseas travel, accident and sickness insurance coverage
  • Settling-in allowance for tenures of 4 or more months: ¥200,000
  • Monthly research support allowance of ¥70,000

Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard)


JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard) provides opportunities for young postdoctoral researchers from overseas to conduct cooperative research with leading groups in Japanese universities and other research institutions under the guidance of a host researcher.

Number (world wide) 330 per year (including 9 from the nominating Authorities in UK )
Duration of Stay 12 - 24 months
Coverage of
Fellowship
  • Return air ticket
  • Monthly maintenance allowance: ¥362,000
  • Settling-in allowance: ¥200,000
  • Overseas travel, accident and sickness insurance coverage
  • Research grant of up to ¥1,500,000 per year
    (total of ¥3,000.000 for two years)

Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan (Long-Term)


This program allows researchers employed in Japanese universities and other research institutions to invite oversears researchers with exellent records of research achievements to collaborate with Japanese colleagues in carrying out research through long-term visits.

Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan (Short-Term)


This program allows researchers employed in Japanese universities and other research institutions to invite overseas researchers with excellent records of research achievements for short-term visits to Japan and provides them oppotunities to engage in discussions, opinion exchanges, lectures and other activities.
