FY2021 JSPS London Call for the Short Term Pre/Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan (Final call for FY2021)

Fellowships

This programme provides the opportunity for short-term visits for pre- and post-doctoral UK researchers and European, North American and Canadian researchers based in the UK and Ireland, for cooperative research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions. The programme is designed to provide researchers with first-hand experience of the research and living environment in Japan, whilst expanding academic exchange between Japan and the UK or Ireland. Researchers from any fields; Computer, Engineering, Health, Biological, Life, Natural and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences etc. are eligible to apply. Awards will cover visits of 1 to 12 months.

Fellowship Start Period: 1st November 2021 – 31st March 2022

JRPs-LEAD with UKRI (JSPS - UKRI joint call)

Bilateral

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)  provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities.

Social sciences, Arts and Humanities

This call for proposals seeks to explore the role of social science, arts and humanities research in pandemic preparedness and post-pandemic recovery, including how we can build sustainable societal systems, communities and cultures that can respond to future outbreaks.

This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength and shared interest.

Whilst this call is open across the entire breadth of the social sciences, arts and humanities, we are particularly interested in proposals that:

  • Acknowledge the current global context in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and aim to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic. For example, this might include proposals that aim to contribute towards improving policy, communication and service design post COVID, speeding up recovery and reducing costs and long-term scarring, or influencing the direction of recovery towards a more equitable, inclusive, sustainable and resilient societies, communities and cultures.

Proposals should also:

  • Consider how to make the best use of available expertise in the UK and Japan, together with the added value of new existing collaborations.
  • Demonstrate evidence of the strength and complementarity of their collaboration and how the partnership will be managed.

*Under no circumstances will JSPS accept applications submitted after the deadline.

*Once an application is submitted, you may not be able to revise and resubmit it.

The PIs on both the Japanese and UK sides must submit a single joint application to JSPS. UK applicants do not have to submit to UKRI. For details, please refer to

Total Amount of 
Project Funding

Project funding by JSPS:

Up to JPY 10,000,000 per fiscal year per project (Up to JPY 30,000,000 for entire project period)

Project funding by UKRI:

UK applicants can request between GBP 350,000 to GBP 425,000 from UKRI for the UK component of the project. UK applicants are required to provide a detailed breakdown of the UK budget in the UK costing template (which is part of the main application form).

Research Expenses: Cost of goods, domestic travel expenses, international travel expenses, salary, others

*JSPS covers these costs for the Japanese teams. (UKRI covers the costs for the UK teams.)
