Bilateral

Joint Research Project

Project title: Brane-world Gravity and Cosmology
Japanese Lead Scientist: Professor Kei-Ichi Maeda School of Science and Technology, Waseda University
UK Counterpart: Professor David Wands Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, University of Portsmouth
Project Duration: 2005 to 2007

I first met Prof Maeda when he visited the University of Sussex around 1994/5 when I was a post-doctoral researcher there. I already knew of his research, and following discussions during his visit we wrote a research paper together.

I first visited Japan in 2001 to give a talk at a conference at the University of Tokyo, and I also visited Prof Maeda and his group at Waseda, returning for a longer visit in 2004. Prof Maeda has visited our group at the University of Portsmouth on many occasions but I don't have a record of the dates.

We have published 3 journal papers together (published in 1996, 2000 and 2002) which have been cited more that 250 time on SPIRES-HEP database ( http://inspirebeta.net/?ln=en ). I have also published 3 papers with Shuntaro Mizuno, a former student of Prof Maeda at Waseda (now a post-doctoral researcher in Paris), and 1 paper with Shinji Tsujikawa, another former student (now faculty member in Tokyo University of Science).

Last year I was a visiting professor at the University of Kyoto and an invited speaker at the Japanese General Relativity and Gravitation Society meeting in Kyoto which celebrated the 60th birthday of Professor Maeda.

JSPS support has been key in developing close links between my department, the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, and researchers in Japan. Tsujikawa and Mizuno were both JSPS fellows at the University of Portsmouth, and another JSPS fellow, Kazuya Koyama, is now a lecturer in our university.
