This programme provides the opportunity for short-term visits for pre- and post-doctoral UK researchers and European, North American and Canadian researchers based in the UK and Ireland, for cooperative research with leading research groups at Japanese Universities and Institutions. The programme is designed to provide researchers with first-hand experience of the research and living environment in Japan, whilst expanding academic exchange between Japan and the UK or Ireland. Researchers from any fields; Computer, Engineering, Health, Biological, Life, Natural and Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences etc. are eligible to apply. Awards will cover visits of 1 to 12 months.

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities.

Social sciences, Arts and Humanities This call for proposals seeks to explore the role of social science, arts and humanities research in pandemic preparedness and post-pandemic recovery, including how we can build sustainable societal systems, communities and cultures that can respond to future outbreaks. This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength and shared interest. Project funding by JSPS: Up to JPY 10,000,000 per fiscal year per project (Up to JPY 30,000,000 for entire project period) Project funding by UKRI: UK applicants can request between GBP 350,000 to GBP 425,000 from UKRI for the UK component of the project. UK applicants are required to provide a detailed breakdown of the UK budget in the UK costing template (which is part of the main application form). |

Fellowships are expected to commence between 1 September 2021 – 30 November 2021.
*There may be an extension to this visit period depending on the state of the COVID pandemic at that time which could restrict international travel.
This fellowship provides the opportunity for researchers based outside of Japan to conduct collaborative research activities with leading research groups at Japanese universities and research institutions for visits of between 12 to 24 months.
Eligible applicants should be a UK resident and currently based at a UK university or research institution. The applicant needs to have finished their PhD at the time of applying to start their fellowship in Japan or have obtained their PhD on or after 2nd April 2015.
Eligible research fields must be within the remit of natural sciences, which includes but is not limited to biological research, chemistry, engineering, mathematics and physics.

The EPSRC are seeking expressions of interest by 16:00 (BST), Wednesday 9th September 2020, for participation of UK groups in the JSPS Core-to-Core Programme in the area of advanced functional materials. Proposals must principally focus on the physical science of materials rather than their incorporation into devices or use in other applications.

Bilateral Joint Projects with JSPS’ Counterpart Funding Institution in the UK (The Royal Society)
This scheme is based on an agreement with The Royal Society. JSPS will cover the costs of the Japan team, and The Royal Society will cover the costs of the UK team.
- It is intended that JSPS and The Royal Society will fund the same joint research projects.
- The counterpart UK team leader is to submit an application to The Royal Society. Applications submitted by one side only will not be accepted. Japan and UK team leaders should therefore be sure that their counterpart submits a matching application.
*Please note under this scheme only joint research projects are supported and not Seminars.

The International Prize for Biology is a commemorative prize to celebrate the sixty-year reign of Emperor Showa and his longtime devotion to biological research. It also pays tribute to the Emperor Emeritus, who has striven for many years to advance the study of gobioid fish taxonomy while contributing continuously to the developing of this prize.
Based on nominations gathered from around the world, the Prize is awarded annually to a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution to make advance in biological sciences.
The research field of this year's Prize is "Biology of Environmental Responses".
