ESRC-AHRC UK-Japan SSH Connections Grants

The ESRC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) are inviting applications for the UK-Japan Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Connections grants, aimed at fostering the development of long-term relationships with Japanese researchers in the field of social sciences and humanities (SSH).
The overall budget for this call is £1.5 million, with funding up to £50,000 (at 100% non standard fEC) per applicant for a maximum period of 18 months.

FY2019 EPSRC UK-Japan Call in Coordination with the JSPS Core to Core Programme

The EPSRC are seeking expressions of interest by 16:00, Thursday 23rd August 2018, for participation of UK groups in the JSPS Core-to-Core Scheme in the area of advanced functional materials. 

The EPSRC will contribute up to £2M for the call as matching funding to that provided by JSPS. Applicants will be informed by the EPSRC of the outcome of their expression of interest during the week of 10th September 2018 and those invited to submit a full application to the EPSRC should do so by 16:00, 25th October 2018.

The EPSRC will fund approximately two collaborations depending on success in the peer review process that will be managed thereafter by JSPS. Funds should be used over a 5 year period for joint research projects, seminars and researcher exchanges with the aim to create world-class research hubs centred around the UK, Japan and at least one other country. Groups in all countries involved must successfully secure funds for the project to go ahead. JSPS will confirm this in February 2019 and successful projects are to start from April 2019.

UKRI - JSPS joint call 2018 (JRPs Lead with UKRI)

UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are pleased to invite applications to the first UKRI-JSPS joint call. Deadline for Expression of Interests/ Full applications: mid July to mid August 2018 This initiative will provide funding for high-quality collaborative research projects between UK and Japanese researchers which contribute to advancing impacts for the benefit of both countries. UKRI and JSPS are keen to support collaboration between leading researchers and teams in areas of mutual strength through sharing resources including research facilities. The UKRI has allocated £5 million and JSPS has allocated 300,000,000 yen (approximately £2 million) to this activity to support 10 bilateral projects in total. Successful projects should start from 14th February 2019. The UKRI component of this call will be funded through the Fund for International Collaboration and the JSPS component of this call will receive financial support from within the framework of its International Joint Research Programme.

FY2019 Call for Bilateral Joint Research Projects / Seminars

Type A: Bilateral Joint Projects with JSPS’ Counterpart Funding Institutions
This scheme is based on an agreement with the Royal Society.

Duration of Project: 2 years

Level of funding:

JSPS: Up to 2,000,000 JPY per fiscal year (Up to JPY 4,000,000 in total)

Royal Society: Up to GBP 12,000 in total

*Starting date: 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020 for the Japanese side and from 18 March 2019 to 2020 for the UK side.

Application Period: 

JSPS: Wednesday 22nd August to Wednesday 5th September, 2018, Japan time.

Applications should be sent centrally by the institution in Japan to JSPS Tokyo. JSPS Tokyo does not accept applications from individual researchers and please note that the applicant's affiliated institution may set an earlier, internal deadline to collect and check the format of these applications before forwarding to JSPS Tokyo. Under no circumstances will JSPS Tokyo accept a late application.

Type B: Open Partnership Joint Projects/Seminars

Under this scheme JSPS has no formal agreement with another funding body. The Japan based group can receive support from JSPS and the counterpart group in another country should seek support for their involvement from a funding body recognised by JSPS.

Duration Supported:

Joint Projects – up to 2 years 

*Start date must be during the period of 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020

Joint Seminars – up to 1 week

* Seminars must be held during the period of 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020

 

Level of funding:

Joint Projects - Up to JPY 2,000,000 per fiscal year    (Up to JPY 4,000,000 in total)

Joint Seminars - Up to JPY 2,000,000

Application Period:

UK nationals for 2019 MEXT Postgraduate Scholarship Programme

The Call for Nominations of 2018 (34th) International Prize for Biology

The International Prize for Biology is a commemorative prize to celebrate the sixty-year reign of Emperor Showa and his longtime devotion to biological research. It also pays tribute to the present Emperor, His Majesty, Emperor Akihito, who has striven for many years to advance the study of gobioid fish taxonomy while contributing continuously to the developing of this Prize.

Based on nominations gathered from around the world, the Prize is awarded annually to a researcher who has made an outstanding contribution to make advance in biological sciences.

The research field of this year’s Prize is “Paleontology.”

2018 Master’s and Doctoral Programmes at UNU-IAS in Tokyo

The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) is now accepting applications for September 2018 admission to our postgraduate degree programmes: the Master of Science in Sustainability and the PhD in Sustainability Science. The application deadlines are 28 February 2018 for the master’s programme, and 27 April 2018 for the doctoral programme. Both programmes start in September 2018.
